Emergency Services

Department of Public Safety
Department of Public Safety is the department for the University of Michigan Police. They provide emergency services to students or any individuals having campus-related concerns about their safety or the safety of others. The officers are also trained to assist with mental health emergencies and can do safety checks on students.

Psychiatric Emergency Services at the University of Michigan Hospital
Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) provides emergency/urgent walk-in evaluation and crisis phone services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for people of all ages. The following services are provided; psychiatric evaluations, treatment recommendations; crisis interventions; screenings for inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations and mental health and substance abuse treatment referral information.

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System: Psychiatric Access
The staff at SJMH Psychiatric Access provides mental health assessments through the Emergency Department and can make arrangements for hospitalization to referrals to community providers as needed. No prior appointments are necessary in the Emergency Department, and telephone calls are welcome anytime at 712-2762. Services also include partial hospitalization programs for adolescents and adults.

St. Joseph Mercy Health System: St. Mary Mercy Hospital Behavioral Medicine Department
The Behavioral Medicine department provides mental health services for adults age 18 and over, including inpatient psychiatric unit and a chemical dependency unit. Emergency psychiatric care is available 24 hours.The Mental Health Unit staff provides care to individuals requiring short-term inpatient psychiatric care. Through a structured plan of individual counseling, group therapy, activities and family support, patients are given the opportunity to develop and improve their social, physical and emotional skills. Admission to the unit may be voluntary or involuntary. St. Mary Mercy Hospital also provides both inpatient and outpatient chemical dependency programs. They include individual and group counseling and treatment for alcoholism, drug addiction and related emotional difficulties. Support groups available such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon Family Groups, Families Anonymous, Women for Sobriety and Narcotics Anonymous

Counseling & Treatment

Ann Arbor Consultation Services
A private counseling center in Ann Arbor that has a broad range of clinicians including psychologists, social workers, counselors and psychiatrists. Services include individual therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, couples or marriage counseling, family therapy, substance abuse counseling, and medication management. Must be in therapy to see a psychiatrist.

Anxiety Disorders Clinic
Clinic specializing in the treatment of anxiety disorders with options for both psychotherapy (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy) and medication

Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County
A clinic not affiliated with U-M that provides mental health services from licensed social workers and psychologists. Services are offered for families, couples and individuals and include in-depth assessments and short-term, solution-focused therapy designed for the specific needs of each client. Substance abuse assessments and treatment are also available. When appropriate, on-site psychiatric evaluation and medication monitoring provided.

Center for Eating Disorders
Founded in 1983, the Center for Eating Disorders (CED) marks 25 years of serving our community. CED offers outpatient treatment, education, support, and referral services to children, adolescents, and adults with eating, weight, and body image disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, compulsive eating/binge eating disorder and related issues.

Center for Neuropsychology, Learning & Development
CNLD offers comprehensive assessment services including neuropsychological, psychological and developmental evaluations. Our clinic also provides therapy services for individuals (adult, teen and child) and families, as well as parent guidance. Case management, advocacy and treatment planning to implement educational recommendations and interventions, along with school consultation and staff development also are available. We work with other professionals in the local community who offer specialized tutoring for: learning difficulties; performance coaching for improving study skills, organization and work efficiency; advocacy for clients; speech and language therapy; memory training; occupational and physical therapy; mental health interventions and medical services.

Chelsea Community Hospital
Chelsea Community Hospital offers a continuum of behavioral health services to meet the specific needs of patients of all ages and their families. This clinic is not affiliated with the U-M. Services include inpatient, outpatient, day treatment programs and medication.

Community Support and Treatment Services
Community Support and Treatment Services is a community mental health program, operated under contract to the Washtenaw County Health Organization and is not affiliated with the U-M. CSTS offers assistance to individuals with severe or chronic mental health conditions. It is primarily a resource for individuals without health insurance or with limited income. Specialized services include "supported community living," "crisis residential services," "family and consumer education and support," "case management," and "assertive community treatment (ACT)." Additional specialized services and resources are available for youth (birth -18 years of age), older adults, and individuals with developmental disabilities or dual diagnosis (mental health and substance abuse).

Counseling and Psychological Services
Counseling and Psychological Services is free to all enrolled U-M Ann Arbor campus students. Services include crisis intervention, brief personal counseling and short-term psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and groups. Psychiatric evaluations and medication monitoring are also offered as long as students are actively participating in counseling support at CAPS. Common reasons people go to CAPS are: anxiety, depression, relationship issues, academic stress, and eating disorders. Consultation and workshops on various informational and skill–building topics are also available. Assistance with referrals is also provided to other UM resources for neurological or other testing services, for psychiatric medication and/or when longer-term counseling is desired or has been recommended.

Eastern Michigan Psychology Clinic
The EMU Psychology Clinic is a teaching facility operated by the EMU Department of Psychology. Low cost clinical services, including psychological assessments and psychotherapy, are provided by clinical psychology graduate students under the supervision of licensed EMU clinical psychology faculty. A broad range of behavioral, emotional, cognitive, developmental, lifespan, health related, family-of-origin and interpersonal issues can be addressed through individual, couples, group, and child therapy.

Faculty and Staff Assistance Program
The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FASAP) provides assistance with resolving personal or work related concerns to University staff and faculty (including students who hold Graduate Student Instructors, Graduate Student Staff Assistants, and Graduate Student Research Assistant positions). Services include short-term (up to 5 sessions) counseling and referrals related to family/marital/partner concerns, emotional concerns, stress from financial difficulties, alcohol or other drug abuse, and child/adolescent development issues.

HIV/AIDS Resource Center
The HIV/AIDS Resource Center (HARC) provides HIV/AIDS prevention, education, outreach, and direct care for people affected by HIV/AIDS. Services include HIV counseling and testing, support groups (including "It’s Not Over," a support group for HIV positive men who have sex with men), case management and referrals. Case management services help link clients to medical care, support groups, nutrition services, housing assistance, mental health services, food pantry, transportation, and emergency financial assistance for clients in need.

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System: Outpatient Behavioral Services
The SJMH Behavioral Services Outpatient Clinics offer a complete range of outpatient mental health services, including psychiatric evaluation and medication management, outpatient psychotherapy (individual, couple, and family), specialty psychotherapy and psycho-educational groups. Professional staff include social workers, psychologists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and adult and child psychiatrists.

Sexual Health Counseling Services
A program of the center for sexual health, Sexual Health Counseling Services is a specialty outpatient mental health clinic. The clinic is dedicated to advancing sexual health care and information through community education, professional training and the evaluation, counseling and treatment of sexual problems. The clinic is staffed by certified, professional sex therapists who specialize in treating sexual difficulties.

Spectrum Center
Spectrum Center provides a comprehensive range of education, information and advocacy services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students, faculty, and staff, their families and friends, and the campus community at large. The staff offers informal counseling for individuals as well as referrals to professional counseling both within and outside the University community. Advocacy services range from quick advice to in-depth consulting and crisis intervention services for organizations. Their office also has a large library, LGBT newspapers and resource guides, a magazine collection and brochures. All services are confidential.

St. Joseph Mercy Health System: St. Mary Mercy Hospital Behavioral Medicine Department

The Women's Center of Southeastern Michigan
The Women’s Center is a privately funded, facility in Ann Arbor that is not affiliated with the U-M. Services provide low-cost counseling, job coaching, divorce support, monthly legal clinics, financial counseling, tax assistance, educational/support groups, and community referrals. Counselors include volunteer clinicians and graduate student interns in counseling, social work, and psychology. The clinic does not have a psychiatrist on staff and does not provide counseling for chronic psychiatric disorders requiring medication treatment. Although this facility is specifically designed to serve women, the center also invites men and boys to participate in all services except Divorce Dialogues.

University Center for the Child and Family
The University Center for the Child and the Family (UCCF) is a UM facility offering a comprehensive range of mental health services for children and families in the community. UCCF offers counseling, therapy, and other mental health services to children and families in the following areas: learning disabilities, social skills, child evaluations and assessments, IQ testing, ADHD evaluations, emotional and behavioral concerns, parenting, grief and loss, and relationship issues for marriage and couples.

University Health Service
UHS provides health care services including medical management of common mental health issues. Mental health services include primary care evaluation and appropriate management of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and sleep disorders; referrals; medical management for confirmed diagnoses of ADD/ADHD, and prescription renewals for conditions such as stable depression or anxiety for patients who no longer need counseling. To obatin a consultation at the UHS Psychiatry Clinic, it is required to have a referral (written consultation request) from a UHS clinician. Clinicians may also provide referrals to other appropriate resources for counseling elsewhere. Pharmacy located in the building.

University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Services
UMATS is part of the U-M Department of Psychiatry’s Substance Abuse Section, and is committed to providing outstanding clinical care for people recovering from alcohol and other drug problems. Services include assessments, diagnosis, and treatment options for individuals, couples, families, and groups at various times of days and various levels of intensity.

University of Michigan Autism and Communication Disorders Center
UMACC offers a variety of clinical services to children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). At UMACC, we conduct comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, program consultation, social groups, individual counseling and intervention. A licensed clinical psychologist conducts or supervises all clinical work.

University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic and Depression Center
The U-M Department of Psychiatry Ambulatory (Outpatient) Clinic and Depression Center are dedicated to research, education, and treatment of depressive and bipolar illnesses, anxiety disorders, addiction, and other psychiatric illnesses. Services are provided by specialists and multi-disciplinary teams, and include skill-building therapy/evidence-based treatments, individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapies (short-term and long-term), and medication management. Any services can be received independently from others.

University of Michigan Family Assessment Clinic
The University of Michigan Family Assessment Clinic (FAC) is a multidisciplinary team, consisting of faculty, doctoral and master's students, and staff in the University of Michigan Schools of Social Work, Law, Medicine, and Education, the Department of Psychology, and the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Health System. The clinic provides services to the community by evaluating and treating situations involving possible or actual child maltreatment. In addition, the clinic serves as a context for developing knowledge and skills about child maltreatment, child welfare, and related issues through clinical practice and research.

University of Michigan Health System's Employee Assistance Program
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a confidential, no cost service for UMHS Faculty, Staff, and their families. EAP provides brief counseling and coaching services, mediation services, crisis intervention, assessment and referral, educational and training programs, and supervisory, staff and team consultation.

University of Michigan Psychological Clinic
The U-M Psychological Clinic provides outpatient mental health services for adults at U-M and in the community. Services provided by a multidisciplinary team including social work and psychology interns and include consultation, psychological testing, and short-term and long-term insight-oriented and skill-based therapy/evidenced-based treatments for individual adults and couples. Common issues include those related to anxiety, depression, couples issues, and problems with work and study Psychiatric evaluations and medication monitoring are also offered as long as students are actively participating in psychotherapy. The clinic also provides testing services for learning and/or attention difficulties. No crisis intervention or emergency services available.

Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs
The Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs and the William Monroe Trotter Multicultural Center serve as resources of support for diverse student populations in our campus community. The staff's primary focus is to enhance the success of students by building a sense of intra-community through intellectual, social, and cultural educational opportunities; promote a healthier, multicultural and respectful climate that allows for meaningful cross-cultural partnerships among student communities; and engage students in efforts to further develop and deepen their intercultural skills and competencies.

They offer selected student services which are not provided by other University offices or outside organizations including advice, support and advocacy to students with disabilities and referrals for professional evaluations and testing for conditions. Students with diagnosed psychiatric disorders may be eligible for special academic accommodations or tutoring. Students should meet with SSWD staff to discuss appropriate services and register with SSWD to take advantage of benefits. Professors require 2 week notice for special arrangements regarding exams.

Office of Student Conflict Resolution
OSCR provides a variety of services designed to support a safe, just and peaceful community, and to help Michigan students learn how to resolve conflict peacefully. OSCR offers a full-spectrum menu of conflict resolution pathways. These include Facilitated Dialogue, Restorative Justice Circles, Shuttle Negotiation, Social Justice Mediation, as well as the Formal Conflict Resolution process as described by the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities. The Statement is an expression of Michigan’s values that outlines both the rights that U-M students enjoy as well as responsibilities they accept as members of this community. Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center
SAPAC provides educational and supportive services for the University of Michigan community related to sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, sexual harassment, and stalking. Services include 24-hour crisis line, crisis intervention and follow up; and advocacy with the university, legal, and medical systems.

Spectrum Center
Spectrum Center provides a comprehensive range of education, information and advocacy services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students, faculty, and staff, their families and friends, and the campus community at large. The staff offers informal counseling for individuals as well as referrals to professional counseling both within and outside the University community. Advocacy services range from quick advice to in-depth consulting and crisis intervention services for organizations. The Student Veterans Assistance Program helps veterans, guardsmen, reservists, and others receiving US military benefits in making a successful transition into the U-M community. Staff can help students make the transition from active military duty to U-M, and from U-M to active military duty by guiding students to the resources they need to make the most of their U-M experience. Center for Education of Women
The Center for the Education of Women (CEW), a unit of the University of Michigan, offers services to students, faculty, staff and community members. The CEW’s counseling services support women and men through an exploration of educational and career interests within the context of relationships and life circumstances. The counselors work within a developmental framework to help women and men consider their options, make informed choices, and both define and resolve problems, while focusing on issues of achieving balance between work and family responsibilities. Common concerns of participants include goals clarification, feedback on resumes, cover letters, application materials, etc., how to start a job search, educational goals, how to return to college or graduate school, and work/life/family balance issues.

University of Michigan Career Center
The Career Center assists students from all academic units with their career exploration, job search skill development and interest in advanced educational opportunities. Services include individual career counseling, programs and workshops.

University of Michigan Dean of Students Office
The Dean of Students Office serves as a central point of inquiry for students with concerns not addressed in other areas of the University including mental health-related concerns. Possessing an effective understanding of University policies, procedures, and community life, staff work with individual students, student groups, staff, and faculty to resolve conflicts and eliminate barriers to educational and personal goals. Staff also provide and coordinate university resources and provide education and support to faculty and staff dealing with students in difficulty. They are also available to talk with parents about university policies, practices and resources and the Michigan student experience.

University of Michigan International Center
The U-M International Center provides a variety of services to assist international students, scholars, faculty and staff at the University of Michigan as well as American students. The International Center advises on immigration, adjustment to U.S. society and American culture, academic concerns and community resources, and also conducts workshops and orientation sessions for international students, scholars, and U-M departments.

University of Michigan Language Resource Center
Serves, supports, and promotes the study and instruction of foreign languages, cultures, and literatures.

University of Michigan Math Lab
The University of Michigan Mathematics Laboratory (Math Lab) is a walk-in tutoring service available free to all UM students. Tutoring is available for mathematics courses numbered through 217. Though help is not regularly available for other courses, tutors will attempt to answer the questions of any UM student who comes to us for mathematics help. Math Lab Group Homework Policy: In order to work on Group Homework with the Math Lab staff, at least two members of your homework group must be present. The Math Lab policy is to assist the group in coming to its own conclusions.

University of Michigan Science Learning Center
Supports teaching and learning in the natural sciences. Houses computer labs, meeting alcoves, study space and a loan desk for reserve and study materials. University of Michigan Sweetland Writing Center
